Employment rights? They are not important for the new Enterprise Czar, Lord Sugar, are they?
Last week while in Cornwall, I discovered the wine that "my friend" Gordon Brown obviously drinks alot of. It is real (as the picture shows), and aptly titled 'Shite' (made in St Ives)!!
He must have been drinking barrells of it recently with his decision to recruit Sir Alan Sugar, and appoint him a Lord, and make him the Enterprise Czar. What sort of message does this give out to employees across the country, when someone who has the catch line "You're Fired" is now a (supposedly) influential Lord? Especially with his forthright views in the workplace!
When interviewed recently by The Times, he revealed a complete disregard to recognition of employment rights:
- "Maternity rights for working mothers have gone too far"
- If he interviews a woman for a job, he feels that it only fair that he is able to ask her whether she has plans for any children.
- When hiring a mother, he feels he should be able to ask "Do you think you will be able to cope in this job? You have got to get your kids sorted"
- "Human rights are rubbish"
Is the recent claim against Lord Sugar, of sex discrimination by one of his former employees just hot air? Who knows, but you wouldn't bet against that settling out of court would you?
I am just wondering who will be next in line for a Lordship?
Maybe Disney will be given a major role in their election strategy?

So, what is your advice for women with children? My son is 5 months old now and work is starting to be a consideration. I was contracting when I got pregnant, so I don’t have a job to return to. How hard will it be to return to ‘real’ work and how should I approach it with employers?
